We provide a full after hours emergency service which is run in connection with our other clinic – New Plymouth Vet Group.
Outside our normal business hours, please call (06) 751 3000 and you will be directed to a phone message that will inform you of the on-call vet’s phone number.
We do the vast majority of our out of hours work “in house”. Clients can phone 24/7 for advice on how to contact a vet direct.
An out of hours call out fee will be charged for all out of hours consults along with any treatment needed.
For information on payment methods please read our payment policy.
This service is available to help our clients when they are faced with a pet emergency. Our animal emergency service treats pets who have been involved in road incidents, have an acute illness, or have come into contact with harmful poisons.
The skilled and compassionate emergency vets will assess the pet in question, discussing the situation and treatment options with their owner to help them decide on the best course of action.
Cases of poisoning are common with symptoms including seizuring or bleeding. The most common causes of pet poisoning are metaldehyde slug baits and rat poisons. If your pet suddenly becomes unresponsive, lame, or you suspect they have ingested poison, call our 24/7 emergency line on 06 7513000
Some pet emergencies include (but not limited too)
- Significant trauma (such as a road traffic accident or dog attack)
- Respiratory distress – trouble breathing, non stop coughing or gagging
- Cardiac issues
- Severe bleeding
- Toxic ingestion (antifreeze, chocolate, rat or slug bait, xylitol)
- Seizures or staggering
- Unconsciousness
- Complications during labour or delivery
- Bloated stomach
- Severe Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Heatstroke
- Eye injuries
- Unable to pass urine or faeces
- Not moving – extremely lethargic
We do ask before you call our emergency service, that you take a moment to pause and think whether your pet requires emergency care or could be seen by a vet during normal business hours. In that case we encourage you to wait and contact the clinic when we are open again.
